With certain things in our lives there are no ambiguities. In one of my earlier blogs, I had written about Coffee vs. Tea. Most people are either coffee drinkers or tea drinkers. There are very few people, who would claim to fall in the common area of the Venn diagram between the two.
Similarly, I have noticed that people are either Morning people or Night people.
In my own family, there is a clear demarcation between the Night Owls and the Early Birds
Both these types exhibit distinctive traits. Early risers are chirpy, and so, so annoyingly productive, as the Sun moves across the sky. Their energy levels peak till lunch time, after which their battery slowly drains. By 8 pm, they are low on enthusiasm and are grouchy companions.
On the other hand, the Night Owls cannot open their eyes when the Sun looks into their windows. Alarms at their loudest, barely manage to cut through one leathery layer of sleep. Persistent and annoying alarms are a must. When the night owl wakes up, stay away till they have their caffeine-fix or whatever else it is that they need to jolt awake. These people mechanically perform their chores till about lunch time, after which they are fully awake. Their enthusiasm starts peaking late in the afternoon, as they effortlessly finish their chores. By dinner, they are at their happiest best.
Most families have combinations of these two types and there are always family stories about members who have never seen a sunrise or about members who have never stayed up till midnight.
I am a loyal Night Owl Club member. Mornings are like midnight. How I wake up everyday baffles me. I love the quiet after everyone goes to sleep – catching up on work and my reading…can’t go to sleep without a book.
So what are you? A Night Owl or an Early Bird? Would love to know
I think I actually am one of the rare middle people – I like to wake up early, but I also like to stay up late. Thankfully, I can get by on relatively little sleep!

Interesting…Sarah. It’s nice that you can get by with fewer hours of sleep. Thank youβΊβΊ

Interesting post Nimi. I must be one of them in the middle. I like to get early up in the morning and have mostly energy there. I need to relax a little in the afternoon, if I need to have energy later at the day/evening now. Earlier I went to bed after midnight and early up in the morning, but I don’t have so much energy any longer.

I’m an early bird in that I can’t sleep very late and wake up easily. That doesn’t stop me from being grouchy in the mornings though, especially when I didn’t get enough sleep. Also, my favorite time of day is evening/night time…when all the cares of the day are behind me. However, towards about 10PM I start yawning…sometimes earlier.

I’m a night owl. Waking at any time before noon and you’ll find me grumpy with a mess of hair and I won’t even care to brush it, until I’ve had a cup of coffee.

Early bird for sure! I get most of my best work done before even the sun wakes up. And I’m always in bed before sunset. I suppose my line of work is to blame for that. Have to make sure people have their morning news to read over coffee before work. π

For me it works because I’ve done it for so many years. However, I can’t see the average person being able to stick to a schedule like mine. Think of me as a morning new anchor. You know…the ones who are already at work, in makeup, and on your tv by 4am LOL

I’m an early bird and although I like both herbal teas and coffee, I don’t regularly drink either.

I have been a night owl for years but lately I am force to make the transition to an early bird due to schedule changes at work. I have found that being an early bird is so hard. To start with, I am not getting a good sleep even if I go to bed early. On top of that, my morning is mostly spent doing things totally unproductive. The schedule change is temporary and I canβt wait to get back to being a night owl. I just enjoy the serenity of the darkness. 11 PM now, time to go to bed for me π

I’m such a night owl but my entire life I have been surrounded by morning people! When I say morning I mean morning. Like 5 in the morning morning. I’ve decided it is my life’s giggle and it will never change.
