Many years ago, when my husband and I were at a loose end one Saturday, we decided to go out for an ice cream. My husband heavily recommended a small ice cream shop, whose specialty ice creams were all the rage.
We finally got there. It was a hot and humid day, so it was the perfect day for an ice cream.
The shop itself was small and unassuming. We sat down and reviewed the menu. Exotic ice cream flavour-names caught our eye. And as I scanned the menu, my husband laughed out aloud.
He said, “I know what you should have. The Green Chilli Ice cream.”
“Green Chilli Ice cream?” I repeated.
“You love spice and you want ice cream, so imagine..it’s the perfect combo for you”, said my husband.
I gave in, still not convinced about the flavour. But well, the order was placed and we waited. I have to admit though, that I was a little excited to try it.
Our ice creams arrived. The scoop was a pale green.
I dug into it with the spoon. The cold hit my tongue first, following which the spice of the green chillies spread across my tongue, sharp and piercing, the cold no longer numbing the senses.
My husband looked at me expectantly.
“Hmmm, can’t really say anything, have to eat some more”, I said.
But five spoons later, I was still struggling with the ice cream.
I told my husband that cold spice is not really my thing, though I love spicy food.
Green chillies were never meant to be made into ice creams.
My husband had to eat both our portions, as I ordered another regular mango scoop.
Have you tried any interesting ice cream flavours?
‘Green Chilly Ice Cream’ sounds good, I am not sure of the taste though. I love to try out new things; Deciphering proteins in the lab, experimenting with egg-whites in the kitchen. 🙂

I went with my friends on a treat to a ice cream parlour and we were all set for trying out some thing new, cause we have already tasted almost all the flavors there.. So, we tried some new combos that day.. One such combo was..
A scoop of mango splash, topped with strawberry sauce and bits of chocolate chips and nuts…
The shopkeeper was perplexed at our choice, and was as eager as us to see our reaction…
Sadly none of us liked it, but who would waste ice cream? ? 😉
So we gulped it down and named as the punishing treat thereafter.. That is always on the list, when we are giving out treat to mock them.. 😝
Thanks for reminding the fun we had.. 😉

I had garlic ice cream at a garlic festival once – an ice cream experience I don’t wish to repeat. Some folks loved it though!

A green chilly Ice -cream! What would human ingenuity come up with next?
Since you did not much fancy that flavour, did you make any suggestions to the shop guy?

No adventurous ice cream tasting for me. It’s mint chocolate chip with a scoop of jamoca. So luscious!!!!! Yummm!!!!!!!!!

Oh gosh! The flavors that were once considered exotic really aren’t that unusual anymore. There are so many interesting ice cream flavors. But green chili definitely stands out. I would be curious to see what else they have on their menu.

There was a Manchurian one…the others were mostly the usual fun ones…The Green Chilli truly took the cake😉😉

Oh, okay! I’m really into chocolate… maybe you already know. If there were any unusual chocolate ones, I might just have to go over there to try them, sparing no expense!!

My wife loved ice cream but I’ve never been a big fan (sorry). We decided to take a run out to an ice cream farm with our daughter one day and back then I think they had 42 flavours or something. The two of them made a determined effort to sample as many tasted as possible.I think pistachio was favourite that day.

42 flavours. What fun it must have been. Pistachio is one of my favourites too. Did they sample all 42?😆😆

If not, then they must have got very close. Even a teaspoon at a time that’s a lot of ice cream.

I’m a purist. Plain old vanilla is perfect for me. Chile flavored ice cream is just wrong.

This does not sound like something I would like! I think I will stick with regular flavors of ice cream for now!

Great post Nimi! This brought back many fond memories of going to the ice cream store on Sunday after dinner for a treat. I always ate the largest portion they had. I tried a lot of exotic flavors in different countries like red bean, green tea and Kiwi, and lemon, which aren’t bad but I still like the traditional flavors of those days long ago. Just not a liter of it anymore 🙂

Lovely memories aren’t they? Kiwi sounds yummy. Liter tubs of ice cream are definitely out now😉😉 Traditional flavours are the ones that I love too

My favorite is still a lemon ice cream my Mom made with cream and real lemons. I did have a good bacon ice cream one time. It was sweet.

I once tried a spicy cayenne pepper and chocolate ice cream at a local place. The reason why I enjoy ice cream is to quench the heat. This did not happen 🙂

Yes…if it doesn’t serve the purpose there’s no point. Cayenne pepper..hmmm interesting.😆

There is no way I would even contemplate trying that particular dish Nimi! I am so non-experimental when it comes to food. I go with what I know. I was out for drinks with work mates a few years ago and one of the guys bought me a “Chilli Beer” telling me it was “really nice” … it ruined my taste buds for the rest of the night. He thought it was funny … I did not! Gross! 🙂

Imagine not being able to taste or enjoy anything else 😯 I do like to try new things but this was an experiment that went totally wrong

I forgot to say, this post reminded me of when my Gran used to offer us chocolate … only to find out it was actually ginger covered in a drop of chocolate. We shouldn’t play these types of games with our taste buds .. They deserve better! 🙂

Sometimes I cook onion-tomato-garlic sauté puree (tadka) in bulk. I put the right proportions in small air-tight containers and later use them for tempering the individual recipes. And when I take them out they look like…well…onion-tomato ice-cream.
